چکیده

Clinical trial eligibility criteria define fine-grained characteristics of research volunteers for various disease trials and hence are a promising data source for disease profiling. This paper explores the feasibility of using disease-specific common eligibility features (CEFs) for representing diseases and understanding their relatedness. We extracted disease-specific CEFs from eligibility criteria on ClinicalTrials.gov for three illustrative categories - cancers, mental disorders and chronic diseases - each including seven diseases. We then constructed disease-specific CEF networks to assess the degree of overlap among the diseases. Using these automatically derived networks, we observed several findings that were confirmed in medicine. For example, we highlighted connections among schizophrenia, epilepsy and depression. We also identified a link between Crohn's disease and arthritis. These observations confirm the value of using clinical trial eligibility criteria for identifying disease relatedness. We further discuss the implications of CEFs for standardizing clinical trial eligibility criteria through reuse.

Structuring Clinical Trial Eligibility Criteria with the Common Data Model

This paper presents a method for classifying and structuring free-text clinical trial eligibility criteria using the OMOP Common Data Model (CDM). Our method was applied to eligibility criteria text available from the largest clinical trial repository ClinicalTrials.gov. Structurally complex criteria were simplified and rewritten as simpler sentences connected by logical operators: AND or OR. S...

How Have Cancer Clinical Trial Eligibility Criteria Evolved Over Time?

Knowledge reuse of cancer trial designs may benefit from a temporal understanding of the evolution of the target populations of cancer studies over time. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective analysis of the trends of cancer trial eligibility criteria between 1999 and 2014. The yearly distributions of eligibility concepts for chemicals and drugs, procedures, observations, and medical conditio...

A method for discovering and inferring appropriate eligibility criteria in clinical trial protocols without labeled data

BACKGROUND We consider the user task of designing clinical trial protocols and propose a method that discovers and outputs the most appropriate eligibility criteria from a potentially huge set of candidates. Each document d in our collection D is a clinical trial protocol which itself contains a set of eligibility criteria. Given a small set of sample documentsD',|D'|≪|D|, a user has initially ...
